Lulu in Cutknife

*Note - photos were snapped and post was written in June 2013.

On our way to Saskatoon from Bonnyville, Lulu and I took the scenic route and stopped at Cutknife, Sask. to see the World's Largest Tomahawk.

It had just finished raining so it was nice to get out and stretch.  Lulu stretched her neck and looked around at the sights.

"What happened to that building?"  Lulu asked.  "What's that thing sticking in the roof?"

"And look at those feathers!"  exclaimed Lulu.  "What kind of bird are those from?"

"I wouldn't want to meet that bird!"  said Lulu looking around.  "Mom!  You are too far away!  I need protection!"

"I think we looked around enough," said Lulu.  Let's get back in the car before that big bird comes around."

And so we continued on our way.

Lulu and the Giant Mushrooms

Lulu and I are finally home from our three weeks away.  I will be posting pics taken throughout our travels.

The first leg of our trip took us to Bonnyville, AB. to visit Barry.  On the way, Lulu and I stopped at Vilna, AB to see the World's Largest Mushrooms.

We had tried to visit them earlier this year but the street was flooded and muddy and we couldn't get near them.

This time we made it and Lulu enjoyed picking at the grass that grew between the paving stones.

It was a very small park and the grass was covered with dandelions, which do not interest Lulu in the slightest.

The mushrooms were not a big thrill for Lulu, but she doesn't eat them in real life either so naturally she ignored these.

Lulu was more interested in checking out the lawn and looking for bugs.

I thought the mushrooms looked kind of neat for a photo-op but Lulu was done and wanted to be on her way.

The mushrooms represent the tricholoma uspale mushroom that grows wild in the area and is either dried or cooked by local mushroom hunters.

Lulu and the Perogy

Lulu and I stopped in Glendon, AB to check out the big perogy.  She had already seen the pysanka and the kielbasa so we decided to check it out.

It was large and made me hungry (I love perogies).

Lulu wasn't too happy though and it was very wet in the park with lots of water.

She couldn't wander around looking for treats so she had to stay on the cement pad.  Poor girl.  I stopped a while later along the road where she could scratch in the grass and weeds looking for bugs and seeds.   ;)

Lulu and the Dragonfly

Lulu and I were on the road again - this time to visit Barry in Bonnyville, AB and to move the trailer up there from winter storage in Red Deer, AB.

We stopped to check out the dragonfly in Wabamun, Alberta.

They don't claim it is the "World's Largest Dragonfly" but it is "Canada's Largest Dragonfly".  I checked on Google and the have the "World's Largest" at Ottertail, MN.

Lulu wasn't impressed because from her view, all she saw was a tall pole.

Lulu also didn't like the fact that most of the grass was still brown.

It was too early for her to have green grass yet.

But she gave in and ate brown grass, picking through it for tender morsels of new green blades of grass.

Onward we go!  Lulu, the travelling chicken and Joan, the chicken chauffeur.  ;)

Mundare Kielbasa

Lulu and I stopped in Mundare, AB to check out the kielbasa/kubasa/Ukrainian sausage.

The sausage company is well known all over western Canada.  I have known people from Saskatchewan drive to Alberta to get some of this tasty treat when it wasn't available locally.

Of course, Lulu had to pose for me with the sausage.

She had to wait patiently while another couple took her picture as well.  They had just come from Vegreville and got pictures of the giant pysanka/egg and wanted pictures of Lulu and the sausage (probably so they friends would believe them when they told them they saw a chicken in their travels).  We got pics of the egg last year on our way to my dad's birthday.  http://mountaingardengleanings.blogspot.ca/2011/01/worlds-largest-pysanka.html   http://mountaingardengleanings.blogspot.ca/2011/01/worlds-largest-pysanka.html

It was a sunny day, so Lulu didn't mind the stop but did not like the fact that it was all paved.  She prefers her tourist attractions in a park with grass and greenery.

After the photo shoot, we stopped on a side road so Lulu could enjoy grass and weeds, etc.  You have to keep your star happy, you know.  ;)

Lulu Visits the Dinosaurs

On our road trip, Lulu and I took a slight detour so she could visit some of her very distant relatives - the dinosaurs.  We stopped at Drumheller and Lulu met several interesting characters.

The first gentleman was quite the formal guy with his tuxedo jacket and bow tie.

He was not much of a talker but neither was Lulu, who was more interested in the leaves at his feet.

She did pause between bites and commented on his bright toenail polish.  (Much to her regret, she hasn't convinced me to paint her toenails yet.)

At one point, Lulu looked up and said, "Nice jacket, buddy but where are your pants!"

The dinosaur harrumphed and Lulu went back to her snack.

The next relative was Rex, the worlds largest dinosaur.  He stands 25 meters (82 feet) high.

Lulu stood on his toe and exclaimed, "I can see all the way across the parking lot to our car!"

"Boy, Rex,"  Lulu commented, "you really need to take better care of yourself.  Look how wrinkled your toes are getting!"

When asked is she wanted to climb the stairs and see the badlands view from within Rex's mouth, Lulu declined.  She decided she was high enough for her liking.

Across the park we ran into T-Rex.  Lulu posed in her best dinosaur pose -

and then went back to her more favorite past time of snacking.

I did get her to strike a pose with Rex and T-Rex before we headed back out on the road.

But not before a few more bites of grass.

Lulu and the Skunk

Once upon a time there was the biggest little skunk names "Squirt".

Squirt was a very happy skunk, smiling, friendly and always taking the time to stop and smell the flowers.

One day, a travelling chicken named Lulu stopped to visit with Squirt.

"Hello down there,"  Squirt called.  "Nice day for a walk."

"Hello," replied Lulu, "What are you doing way up there?"

"I'm watching over my park and campgrounds," replied Squirt.  "I need to make sure everything is in order."

"Well," exclaimed Lulu, "Maybe I should fly up there to give you a hand.  Besides I want to take a closer look at your flowers - they sure look tasty!"

"Darn,"  huffed Lulu, "You are much too high for me to fly up to.  How did you get so high - I don't see any wings."

"I can't fly,"  said Squirt,  "I don't have any wings!"

"And," he added, "Flowers are for smelling not eating!"

"Well, then," said Lulu, I might as well go back to my trailer.  I may not have flowers to eat but we have lots of mosquitoes!  Bye Squirt, nice to have met you."   "Bye, Lulu,"  replied Squirt, "Come back and visit me sometime."
